Qualifying for Disability Benefits with Ichthyosis

Ichthyosis refers to a group of skin disorders that lead to dry, itchy skin that appears scaly, rough, and red. The symptoms can range from mild to severe. Ichthyosis can affect only the skin, but some forms of the disease can affect internal organs as well. Most people have a genetic form of ichthyosis that results from a changed gene, often inherited from their parents. However, some people develop a form of acquired (nongenetic) ichthyosis from another medical disorder or certain medications. To learn more about how the Social Security Administration (SSA) defines this disability, visit Section 8.00 of the Blue Book.

Does Ichthyosis Qualify for Disability?

Yes, people with ichthyosis do qualify, however the SSA is more inclined to take into consideration the afflicted parts of your body and their functional capacity. In general, you must have two major limbs affected, or you must have lost other qualifying functions including but not limited to:

  • Loss of sight
  • Loss of hearing
  • Loss of ambulation (ability to move from one place to another)
  • Loss of joint use

As with most conditions, it is very important that you remain under a doctor’s care while you are applying for disability benefits with ichthyosis. The SSA will want to see proof of your medical diagnosis including the results of lab tests and/or genetic testing, as well as proof that you have been following your physician’s instructions for at least three months without improvement.
