Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a painful, long-term skin condition that causes skin abscesses and scarring on the skin. The exact cause of hidradenitis suppurativa is unknown, but it occurs near hair follicles where there are sweat glands, usually around the groin, bottom, breasts and armpits. For reasons that are unknown, more women than men have the condition. It’s thought to affect about 1 in 100 people. Does Hidradenitis Suppurativa Qualify for Disability?
Yes, people with hidradenitis suppurativa do qualify, but they need to meet the requirements of the SSA’s guidelines for this disability. Your medical records must show that:
- You have extensive skin lesions that involve both your underarms (axillae),
OR
- both side of the groin (inguinal areas),
OR
- or in the perineum (area around the genitals and anus),
AND
- Your skin lesions must last a minimum of three months even while undergoing continuous treatments as prescribed by your physician.
In addition to meeting these listed eligibility requirements, your hidradenitis suppurativa must also prevent you from getting and maintaining gainful employment either in your traditional field of work or in any other job for which you’d be qualified based on your skills, education, and prior work experience.
