Qualifying for Disability Benefits with Joint Pain

Joint pain is discomfort in a joint. Sometimes, the joint swells and feels warm as well. Joint pain can be a symptom of many ailments, including some viruses, however the most common cause of joint pain is arthritis. Joint pain can be mild, causing soreness only after certain activities. Or it can be severe, making even small movements very painful. To learn more about how the Social Security Administration (SSA) defines this disability, visit Section 1.00 of the Blue Book.

Does Joint Pain Qualify for Disability?

Yes, people with joint pain do qualify, but they need to meet the requirements of the SSA’s guidelines for this disability in one of three ways:

  • The first is to qualify based on the listing under major dysfunction of a joint due to any cause in Section 1.02 of the SSA Blue Book. You must meet one of these two conditions, in addition to having medical imaging which shows damage to your joint(s):
    • Both upper extremities (hand, wrist, elbow, or shoulder) are affected to the point that you are unable to effectively perform either gross or fine movements.
    • One weight bearing joint (ankle, hip, or knee) is affected to the point that your ability to walk is significantly impacted.
  • The second is to qualify for a Blue Book listing based on the actual cause of your joint pain (i.e., surgery, arthritis, lupus, gout). In such cases, refer to the requirements to meet the listing of that condition (severe joint pain will often be one of the requirements).
  • The third is to qualify by showing that your joint pain (along with any other disabilities you may have) makes it impossible for you to perform any job for which you could reasonably be trained.
