Qualifying for Disability Benefits with Phenylketonuria

Phenylketonuria, also called PKU, is a rare inherited disorder that causes an amino acid called phenylalanine to build up in the body. PKU is caused by a change in the phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene. This gene helps create the enzyme needed to break down phenylalanine. Without the enzyme necessary to break down phenylalanine, a dangerous buildup can develop when a person with PKU eats foods that contain protein or eats aspartame, an artificial sweetener. This can eventually lead to serious health problems. To learn more about how the Social Security Administration (SSA) defines this disability, visit Section 10.00 of the Blue Book.

Does Phenylketonuria (PKU) Qualify for Disability?

Yes, people with phenylketonuria (PKU) do qualify, however, because the severity of PKU cases vary from individual to individual, a diagnosis of PKU in and of itself is not enough to qualify a person for Social disability benefits. In order to qualify for Social Security disability benefits as a result of Phenylketonuria, you must prove to the SSA that the applicant is unable to participate in work activity due to the severity of the condition. Your application must include sufficient medical records to prove this fact. A medical history documenting the severity of the PKU condition, any side effects or complications that have occurred because of it and how the Phenylketonuria affects the applicant’s day-to-day activities will go a long way in qualifying an individual for disability benefits.
