Qualifying for Disability Benefits with Pancreatitis
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is a large gland behind the stomach, close to the first part of the small intestine, called the duodenum. The pancreas has two main functions—to make insulin and to make digestive juices, or enzymes, to help you digest food. These enzymes digest food in the intestine. Pancreatitis occurs when the enzymes damage the pancreas, which causes inflammation. Pancreatitis can be acute or chronic. Either form is serious and can lead to complications. To learn more about how the Social Security Administration (SSA) defines this disability, visit Section 9.00 of the Blue Book.
Does Pancreatitis Qualify for Disability?
While there is no specific Blue Book listing for pancreatitis, there are other relevant listings that can apply to your claim. Pancreatitis is a very painful condition that can cause diarrhea, weight loss and other symptoms that limit an individual’s ability to work and function. If your condition has caused severe weight loss, you can ask for your condition to be evaluated under the weight loss listing.
- The Blue Book defines severe weight loss as having a body mass index (BMI) lower than 17.5, which is indicated on two separate medical tests conducted at least 60 days apart within a six-month timeframe.
If you meet these requirements, you have met the specifications to be declared disabled by the SSA. If severe weight loss is not a problem you have experienced, the Disability Determination Service will have to scrutinize your medical records and how the disease has impacted your functionality. There are many symptoms that can be experienced by those suffering from pancreatitis.
