Cubital tunnel syndrome is a condition that involves pressure or stretching of the ulnar nerve (also known as the “funny bone” nerve), which can cause numbness or tingling in the ring and small fingers, pain in the forearm, and/or weakness in the hand. The ulnar nerve runs in a groove on the inner side of the elbow.
Cubital tunnel syndrome may happen when a person bends the elbows often (when pulling, reaching, or lifting) or has an injury to the area. Arthritis, bone spurs, and previous fractures or dislocations of the elbow can also cause cubital tunnel syndrome. In many cases however, the cause is unknown. Does Cubital Tunnel Syndrome Qualify for Disability?
You may qualify for disability benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) if cubital tunnel syndrome or ulnar nerve entrapment has caused you permanent damage or restricted you from many jobs (especially if you’re an older worker). However, to be eligible for disability, your impairment must be so severe that it prevents you from working at the substantial gainful activity (SGA) level for at least 12 consecutive months.
It can be difficult to meet the SSA’s duration requirement with cubital tunnel syndrome because the condition is often treated successfully in less than one year. That said, successful treatment of ulnar nerve entrapment sometimes means changing the type of work you do. For example, a data entry specialist might have to switch to a job that doesn’t require typing. If changing jobs isn’t realistic for you because of your age, education, or work history, the SSA may approve your disability claim.
